Why HC struck down 24000 appointments in Bengal see more...... A big setback In a major blow to the Mamata Banerjee government, the Calcutta High Court on Monday cancelled the appointment of nearly 24,000 teachers and other staff in West Bengal. The court held recruitments made through the State Level Selection Test-2016 (SLST-2016) in West Bengal government-sponsored and aided schools “null and void”. The bench also directed the SSC to initiate a fresh recruitment process. The court further ordered that those recruited illegally must return their drawn salaries within six weeks. Mamata to move SC Terming the high court order as “illegal”, Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee said, “We stand by those who lost jobs. We will ensure you get justice, and challenge the order in a higher court [the Supreme Court].” The recruitment panel chief Siddharth Majumder also said that the high court order would be challenged in the top court. A 2016 recruitment scam? In 2014, the West Bengal SSC introduced th

Biden’s Swing State Boondoggles

Biden’s Swing State Boondoggles see more As part of his strategy to win back support in every all-important swing state before the November election, President Joe Biden was once again in Pennsylvania on April 17 – this time in Pittsburgh, where he made some lavish promises to steelworkers regarding the future of the industry. Biden hinted at tripling the tariffs on steel coming from China – already at 7.5%. Will this be enough to woo voters in the Keystone State? An Offer They Might Refuse Notably, Biden attempted to make political hay over an industry that has seen better days: “For too long, the Chinese government has poured state money into Chinese steel companies, pushing them to make as much steel as possible, subsidized by the Chinese government. Because Chinese steel companies produce a lot more steel than China needs, it ends up dumping extra steel on the global markets at unfairly low prices.” As part of his pitch, Biden said that he was considering steel tariffs on Chines

Denver sweeps homeless encampment but offers no shelter this time see more.... Alexandra Holt said she woke up on Tuesday morning to the police asking her to clean up her tent and leave the 8th Avenue and Navajo Street homeless encampment, where she had been living for a month. “We thought we were going to wake up to housing,” she said. That wasn’t the case on Tuesday. For the first time in six months, Denver swept a homeless encampment without offering shelter. Mayor Mike Johnston previously said the city wouldn't do so.  The situation is yet another stark reminder of the challenges facing Johnston, who has made curbing homelessness in the city his top priority. During his campaign for mayor, Johnston promised to eradicate the problem in his first term in office. While there had been instances in which homeless people couldn't get inside a shelter following an encampment sweep, it's the first time the Johnston administration cited space limitations as the specific reason

DETROIT (AP) — After reporting dismal first-quarter sales, Tesla is planning to lay off about a tenth of its workforce as it tries to cut costs , multiple media outlets reported Monday. Musk's memo said that as Tesla prepares for its next phase of growth, “it is extremely important to look at every aspect of the company for cost reductions and increasing productivity,” The New York Times and CNBC reported.   UN Security Council to vote Friday on Palestinian UN membership see more.... UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - The United Nations Security Council is scheduled to vote on Friday on a Palestinian request for full U.N. membership, said diplomats, a move that Israel's ally the United States is expected to block because it would effectively recognize a Palestinian state. The 15-member council is due to vote at 3 p.m. (1900 GMT) Friday on a draft resolution that recommends to the 193-member U.N. General Assembly that "the State of Palestine be admitted to membership of the United Nations," said diplomats. A council resolution needs at least nine votes in favor and no vetoes by the U.S., Britain, France, Russia or China to pass. Diplomats say the measure could have the support of up to 13 council members, which would force the U.S. to use its veto.
